VCE Legal Studies Unit 1 (Year 11)

 

Unit 1: Criminal Law and Justice focuses on the role of police, their powers of investigation, the procedures of a criminal trial and an examination of possible sanctions that are available to the criminal courts. The concepts of fairness and justice within the criminal justice system are also discussed. In Criminal law students investigate the importance of criminal law and the nature of criminal liability, examine the role of the police in a criminal investigation and explore the procedures of a criminal trial. The courtroom focuses on the Victorian court hierarchy, its personnel and the adversary system of trial. Students investigate the role of the jury in criminal trials as it operates in the criminal justice system.
